Zip Media
Zip Media refers to a type of removable storage solution developed by Iomega in the 1990s. Zip disks were designed to provide a higher storage capacity compared to traditional floppy disks. The most common Zip disk variant had a capacity of 100MB or 250MB, though larger capacities of 750MB and 2GB were later introduced. Zip disks featured a durable, portable design with a protective casing, similar to floppy disks. They were used with Zip drives, which were compatible with various computer systems and offered faster data transfer rates compared to floppy disk drives.
Zip Media gained popularity due to their larger storage capacity and ability to handle larger files, making them suitable for tasks such as data backup, file archiving, and data transfer between computers. They were commonly used by individuals, small businesses, and creative professionals who required additional storage beyond what floppy disks could offer. The Zip disks provided a convenient and portable option for storing and transporting files.
However, with advancements in technology and the rise of more compact and higher-capacity storage solutions such as USB flash drives and external hard drives, Zip Media gradually became less prevalent. Nonetheless, Zip Media holds nostalgic value for those who remember using these storage solutions during the era of emerging digital storage technologies.
